Nikon F4

Battery Packs

A very nice features of Nikon F4 is the interchangeable battery packs. We call it battery pack instead of motor drive because there are no motor inside other than compartment for batteries.

Nikon F4 meaning a F4 body packed with a MB-20 as a basic set. MB-20 holds four AA batteries and is capable of providing a firing rate of 4.0 fps. Nikon recommend only Alkaline batteries to be used in MB-20. For those who want to travel light, MB-20 is a good alternative to go with the F4.

F4s meaning F4 body packed with MB-21 battery pack. This is the only model available in U.S. The MB-21 holds six AA batteries providing a firing rate of 5.7 fps. Incorporated in the MB-21 is a vertical firing button plus an outstanding molded handgrip for vertical firing. There is a switch on the MB-21 to choose between Alkaline and NiCd batteries. In MB-21, 3 batteries are holds in the grip and the other three on the base.

F4e was introduce to the international market (except USA) in year 1991. This is the basic F4 body packed with a MB-23 battery pack and a MS-23 AA battery tray. The MB-23 provides a firing rate of 5.7 fps and vertical firing button. There is a switch on the MB-23 to choose between Alkaline and NiCd batteries. The strength of MB-23 over MB-21 is that all the 6 batteries are stored in the base compartment and can be easily access.

Note: Many photographers use AA lithium batteries in their F4. This is not recommended by Nikon because the original voltage of lithium batteries when new are quite high and their tendency toward voltage fluctuations (more than 1.5 V). NiMh batteries are also not recommend by the factory although many have no problem using them. It is believed that using either lithium or NiMh batteries can greatly shorten the life of the camera, and damage can occur in long run.
